Solitary confinement is not a solution—it is a problem and is WRONG. For the sake of human dignity and justice, it must be abolished.

Why Solitary Confinement Is Torture

  1. Severe psychological distress from prolonged isolation.
  2. Increased risk of depression, often leading to suicidal thoughts.
  3. Social isolation deprives inmates of meaningful human interaction.
  4. Heightened anxiety from constant solitude and lack of stimulation.
  5. Exacerbation of pre-existing mental health issues.
  6. Sleep disturbances due to irregular light exposure and stress.
  7. Cognitive impairments, such as memory loss and difficulty concentrating.
  8. Sensory deprivation, with little to no visual or auditory stimuli.
  9. Feelings of hopelessness from indefinite isolation.
  10. Physical health decline, including muscle atrophy from lack of exercise.
  11. Increased aggression from suppressed frustration.
  12. Breakdown of social skills, making reintegration difficult.
  13. Loss of sense of time due to monotony and lack of natural light.
  14. Psychosis and hallucinations induced by extreme isolation.
  15. Inability to trust others after prolonged solitude.
  16. Heightened paranoia, making inmates feel constantly threatened.
  17. Stigma attached to being in solitary, worsening self-esteem.
  18. Loss of personal identity, as inmates are treated as numbers, not individuals.
  19. Violation of human rights, particularly under international law.
  20. Disconnection from family, causing strain on relationships.
